Club notes 15/04/2018

Our under 14 Boys gave a spirited and skilful performance in their division 2 league game against Kilglass Gaels / St Barry's on Thursday last in Ardcarne Park. Both sides produced scores of the highest quality in a very entertaining and competitive contest which was only decided in the final few minutes in favour of the visitors.

Our Minors played our neighbours  Boyle in the Division 3 League on Friday last. This was a very entertaining game played between two fully committed sides. After both sides traded points in the first half, Boyle scored a goal on the stroke of half time to leave them ahead 1-6 to 0-4. St Michael's started the second half well and scored a fine goal through Fiachra Henry. Both teams continued to score good points and St Michael's went ahead by a point as the intensity of the game increased. However, a couple of points by the visitors left them ahead at the end on a full time score of 1-11 to 1-8. This was a great team effort by all the lads which just came up short and on another day the scoreline may have been different. Team: M.Reynolds, J.Doherty O Brien, R.Gillespie, B.O Dowd, J.Harte (0-1) D.Regan (0-1), S.Blackwell (0-1), N.Sheerin (0-2) A.Tiernan, F.Henry (1-3) A.McGlynn, A.Chilton, M.Heslin. Subs S.Burke, D.McGlynn, D.McDermott, L.Kearns, A O Connor.

The u12s started their Division 3 Spring League campaign on Saturday morning last away to St Croans. All of the panel put in a great team effort for their first outing of the year. Final score St Croans 0-14 St Michael's 0-7. Panel: L.Kearns, E Smyth, A Gaffney, N Fahy, S o Dowd, I Morahan, C Regan, R Henry, D Regan, T Gilboy, C Gaffney, J Wickham, E O Connor, R Guckian, J Oates

We are having a trainers meeting at 7:45 on Monday 23rd April next in the complex. We would like to see representation from all management groups there as discussions on the year to date and the upcoming championships will affect all teams and we would like everyone to be heard. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Congratulations to all the children and their families who made their communion and confirmation this weekend.

St Michael's GAA Dinner Dance

St Michaels GAA Dinner Dance.
Well what can I say to describe the night of the dinner dance. At a time when we are all busy and caught up in work, family and a plethora of other distractions so that often the most we might see each other is leaning over the fence or hiding from the rain in the stand watching one of our teams play a match, it was a joy to catch up with so many players, past and present, neighbours and friends who, as the photos show, turned out in force to help us celebrate St Michaels winning teams 25th and 40th anniversaries respectively. It was a night filled with laughter and memories, old friendships and new and a bit of friendly banter that showed that St Michaels really is at the heart of our parish.
It didn’t just happen by accident and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the organising committee of Eddie Heslin, Anthony Dowd, Seamus Sweeney, Shane McGlynn, Geraldine McMorrow, Marie Heslin, Michael McGonigle and Niamh Sheerin. We would like to thank our special guests for joining us on the night, Shane Curran, Seamus and Myra Mullaney and Ian and Catherine Cooney. We want to thank Joe Dolan and his wonderful staff who made the night so enjoyable, no request was too much for them, Cakes by me for the lovely cupcakes, a sure talking point, Moonstone Jewellers for the fabulous presentations. Dave Byrne who played and ensured we all had sore feet the next morning and the hilarious Tierney Talks who ensured we all had sore sides the next morning.
We would also like to thank our sponsors whose support greatly enhanced the night. Moonstones Jewellery, Carmel’s skincare and beauty, Joe Simons, King & Moffit, Anthony & Angela Dowd, Pat Heslin, Ardcarne Garden Center, Beirnes of Battlebridge, The Cottage Restaurant and Joan & Pat Tiernan.
Most of all we would like to thank all who came out and supported the event, it was a massive success due to the people who came and laughed and danced the night away. Here is to continued success at St Michaels on and off the field and many laughs together in the future.

Update 12/11/17

Under 12 team & management

It was smiles all round for our under 12's and their entourage as team captain Niall Mc Glynn raised the Division 4 Summer league shield at Kilronan Park in Ballyfarnon on Saturday last. This was a final which almost fell victim to Friday night's heavy rain as the original venue of the Abbey Park in Boyle was withdrawn but John O'Connor and Grainne Wallace at St. Ronan's pulled out all the stops to have their pitch available and prepared in a very short time. Thank you to John and Grainne and all at St. Ronan's. It was a very competitive and entertaining encounter with Éire Óg fighting through to the final whistle but thankfully it was the St. Michael's team who finished on top. Well done to the team, management and parents and thanks to all who helped out at the celebrations in the Complex.

The St. Michael's/St. Ronan's under 20's turned around a 4 point half time deficit to win by 8 points in their face off with Kilglass/St. Barry's at Kilglass on Sunday.

Well done to those involved in the Northern Region Under 13 boys development squad training session which was hosted by St. Michael's at Ardcarne Park on Sunday morning.

Tickets for the St. Michael's GAA Club Super Fuel & Holiday draw are now on sale. With extra prizes this year for just €2, winners are in with a chance of having a break on the Shannon, going to the Algarve, going to a Manchester United game or staying in a Castle while others may set their hopes on winning the timber, heating oil, briquettes or turf. The draw will take place in Clancy's of Knockvicar on 17th December.

There was no winner of the club lotto draw which was held in Henry's, Cootehall on 12/11/17. Congratulations to lucky dip winners: Maurice Carty, Keith O'Hara, Stephen Mc Guinness, Anna Butler, Margaret O'Neill. Next draw will be on the 26/11/17 for a jackpot of €2,300.

Update 5/11/17

Under 14 girls and management before their Division 4A final

In a close knit division 4A final which went down to the wire, it was in the last 5 minutes that the St. Michael's under 14 girls lost at Strokestown on Sunday. Each member of the panel should be applauded as they represented their club, families and themselves with great pride and respect. Gratitude goes to the players and management team of Stephen Mc Guinness, Joan Tiernan and Clare Noone and also to the parents and families for their commitment. A big thank you also goes to the under 14 team sponsors of Stephen Mc Guinness of Mc Guinness's Centra, Sligo and to Pat Tiernan of Timber County Wood Flooring.

Also on Sunday our minor girls were narrowly beaten by Western Gaels. Thanks to the players and to the management team of Sorcha Bruen, Katie Daly, Clive Gillespie, Michael McHugh and Eamonn Owens. Thanks also to the parents.

The combined St. Michael's/St. Ronan's under 20 boys lost out to Éire Óg at Ardcarne Park on Saturday.
